  • New government rules are set to be introduced early next year to protect consumers from “subscription traps”, aiming to save the public £400 million annually.
  • The regulations will require companies to send reminders before free or discounted trials end and before contracts of 12 months or more automatically renew.
  • Consumers will gain the right to easily cancel subscriptions online if they originally signed up that way, eliminating the need for lengthy phone calls.
  • A new 14-day cooling-off period will be implemented after free or discounted trials conclude, or when annual contracts renew.
  • Certain memberships for charitable, cultural and heritage organisations will be exempt from these new consumer protection rules.
