Government guarantees smooth conduct of SPM during Northeast Monsoon

THE government will ensure students in flood-affected states, following the onset of the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) are able to sit for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations without disruptions.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he had discussed the situation with Minister of Education, Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek, during a Cabinet meeting last week.

“She informed me that in areas expected to experience severe flooding, the affected students have already been identified. They will be relocated to schools equipped with boarding facilities, where they will sit for their examinations.

“The Examination Board is also fully prepared for this,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid, who also serves as the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), noted that the states at risk of flooding include Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Johor, Melaka, and Negeri Sembilan.

“Kuala Lumpur frequently experiences flash floods, though these are not caused by the Northeast Monsoon.

“I personally chair the national-level Disaster Management Committee meeting, and we have delegated specific responsibilities to various enforcement and relief agencies,” he said.

He said the Social Welfare Department has stockpiled food aid and tents this year, ready for deployment.

“NGOs are also providing greater assistance this time compared to the past, including in the area of communications.

“When electricity is no longer available, amateur radio associations step in to assist with communications,” he said.

Regarding the RM1,000 flood relief payment for flood victims, Ahmad Zahid stated that this initiative will continue, just as it did last year, to help ease their burden.

The 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon (MTL) began on October 27 and is forecast to continue until March 2027. – November 1, 2026
