Minister Zulkifli Hasan says the government is establishing a Friday surau in Bukit Bintang to ease Muslim congregational prayers, with similar plans for Chow Kit.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is working towards establishing a comfortable Friday surau in Bukit Bintang to make it easier for Muslims to perform their weekly congregational prayers in the popular tourist district.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan, in a Facebook post today, said that the area currently houses the Oasis Outreach Bukit Bintang centre as an operation centre.

“We are also focusing on similar efforts in other areas, such as Chow Kit. If there are no obstacles, the Selangor Foundation Building located at the ‘Shibuya’ intersection in Bukit Bintang will be utilised as a surau or mosque.

“Efforts are also made in Chow Kit and other locations with a long-term vision of building a grand mosque to facilitate worship for Muslims, Insya Allah,” he said.

Zulkifli said that for the past two years, his team at the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) have actively organised various dakwah outreach and welfare programmes in Bukit Bintang, Chow Kit and surrounding areas.

“Alhamdulillah, I would like to thank the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) and the Federal Territory Mufti Office for their swift action and efforts,” he said.
