MALAYSIA’S emergency response capabilities have entered a new era with the official launch of the Next Generation Malaysian Emergency Response Services 999 (NG MERS 999), a modernised system designed to provide faster, more precise and inclusive support for the public.
The system, operational since 16 November 2025, represents a strategic collaboration between the Ministry of Communications, Telekom Malaysia Berhad, and five key national emergency agencies, namely the Ministry of Health, Royal Malaysia Police, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force, and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.
According to a joint statement from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Communications, and Telekom Malaysia, the system has been rigorously tested and confirmed to function normally, with emergency cases routed according to a “nearest available” principle to ensure the closest resources are mobilised without delay.
The statement noted that while isolated incidents involving ambulance services have been reported, these have been addressed promptly and seriously, reflecting the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and public well-being.
“In enhancing field response, efforts continue with additional ambulances, strategic deployment of personnel, and active engagement of voluntary organisations such as the Malaysian Red Crescent, St. John Ambulance Malaysia, and local NGOs as part of the national emergency response capability,” the statement said today.
Standard 999 voice calls remain fully operational, while the SaveME999 application provides an additional channel for users requiring text, video, or multimedia communication, supporting the system’s goal of inclusivity and effectiveness in emergency situations.
Telekom Malaysia has committed to ongoing improvements in software and technical processes to ensure smoother operations and improved coordination among all emergency agencies.
The launch of NG MERS 999 marks a significant step in modernising Malaysia’s emergency response infrastructure, aiming to save lives and strengthen national resilience through advanced technology and inter-agency collaboration. - November 18, 2025
