Govt renews push for inclusive digital transformation at WTISD 2025

MALAYSIA is reinforcing its role in shaping a more inclusive and equitable global digital landscape, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said at the launch of the 2025 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) today.

“We are committed to playing an active role in shaping a fairer and more inclusive future while leading digital progress globally,” said Datuk Fahmi during the event, held in conjunction with Girls in ICT Day (GICT) and the 160th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Organised by the Ministry of Communications through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the event is held each year on 17 May, where WTISD serves to raise awareness of the transformative role of information and communication technology (ICT) in global development, with a focus on creating a fairer and more digitally connected society.

Running alongside, the GICT initiative centres on empowering women and girls to pursue careers and leadership roles in the tech sector.

Themed ‘Gender Equality in Digital Transformation’, this year’s programme convened key stakeholders—including policymakers, industry players and youth—to explore how digital innovation can advance inclusion, gender equity and sustainability.

Featured sessions included “The Future of Connectivity: Advancing Digital Inclusion Through Transformative Technologies” and “Borderless Connectivity: How ICT Can Drive Sustainability, Equality & Safety”.

A “pocket talk” titled “Women in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation” spotlighted Malaysia’s strides in promoting women’s participation in the technology sector and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to STEM education.

In celebration of ITU’s 160th anniversary, a commemorative stamp was also unveiled.

Among those present were the Ministry’s Secretary-General YBhg. Datuk Mohamad Fauzi bin Md Isa, MCMC Executive Chairman YBhg. Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din, and ITU Area Representative for Southeast Asia and Other Member States in Asia and the Pacific, Kishore Babu Yerraballa. - May 17, 2025
