THE Cabinet has agreed to introduce a work-from-home policy beginning April 15, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced, as part of broader precautionary and cost-saving measures in response to current economic and geopolitical pressures.
The policy will apply to ministries, government agencies, statutory bodies and government-linked companies, although the Prime Minister said specifics of its implementation would be detailed at a later stage.
Speaking during a brief address last night, Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, said the move formed part of early steps previously signalled by the government, including more restrained Aidilfitri celebrations and reduced public expenditure.
“Previously, we announced that we would take early measures, and this includes more controlled Aidilfitri celebrations, while the government will also scale back spending with cost-saving steps and much more modest festivities.
“I would like to express my highest appreciation and thanks to everyone who has embraced this spirit — not being arrogant, not being wasteful, not treating the situation as normal by flaunting wealth excessively and acting as though no one is affected.
“This attitude will be detrimental to us because many among the people — farmers, fishermen and workers — are still under pressure,” he said.
He also called on wealthier and more influential segments of society to remain mindful of the hardships faced by ordinary Malaysians and to extend assistance where possible.
“However, as we understand the impact, from the government’s side, the BUDI MADANI 95 quota has been adjusted to 200 litres per month starting today as a temporary measure.
“Additionally, subsidised diesel refuelling in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan has also come into effect,” he said.
The measures come against a backdrop of escalating tensions in West Asia since February 28, following attacks involving Israel and the United States against Iran, and subsequent retaliatory strikes by Tehran on US interests in the Gulf. - April 2, 2026
