The Malaysian government is finalising work-from-home guidelines for the public sector and GLCs, with an announcement expected soon from the Chief Secretary
SUBANG: Guidelines for implementing a work-from-home policy across the public sector and government-linked companies are expected to be announced soon by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R Ramanan (pic) confirmed the government is in the final stages of finalising the policy. He stated the rollout is expected to be phased, with initial implementation likely in areas such as the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor and Kuching.
Ramanan noted that most multinational corporations, large companies and banking institutions have already adopted WFH arrangements. He added that the policy is not expected to affect productivity, as computer-based tasks can be performed from anywhere.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced yesterday that the WFH policy will take effect from April 15. The move is a proactive step to address the global energy crisis and reduce fuel consumption.
The policy also aims to safeguard the sustainability of the nation’s energy supply, which has been affected by the conflict in West Asia. Ramanan was speaking after officiating the Program Bicara dan Perkongsian, Menelusuri 1 Mei 2026.
He said the programme serves as a strategic platform to strengthen tripartite relations between the government, employers and workers. It also builds momentum ahead of the National Labour Day celebration at Unifi Arena, Bukit Jalil, on May 1.
“This programme also offers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of workers’ real needs,” said Ramanan. He added it ensures their voices are reflected in the formulation of government policies.
The programme will be rolled out nationwide, including in Sungai Buloh, Ipoh, Batu Pahat, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Samarahan and Sandakan. A range of activities has been lined up to mark this year’s Labour Day celebrations.
These include the Mega Career and Skills Carnival and the KESUMA Service Booth from May 1 to 3 at Bukit Jalil. Other highlights are a pantun writing competition, an Islamic Affairs Forum in Sabah and the Labour Day Run and Ride in Putrajaya.
