PUTRAJAYA: In line with the goals of Malaysia Digital 2030 (MD2030), the Digital Ministry is driving the implementation of its flagship government initiative – the establishment of GovTech Malaysia.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the entity serves as an innovation and development centre for public sector digital solutions. It is designed to accelerate the centralised development of government digital applications and platforms, enable the integrated reuse of digital components, reduce bureaucratic red tape and advance a whole-of-government approach.
“Through the implementation of GovTech, the Digital Ministry’s specific target is to position Malaysia among the world’s top 20 in the Online Service Index under the United Nations E-Government Development Index by 2030.
“This initiative is fully supported by the establishment of a Digital Transformation Unit in every ministry to institutionalise operational agility in policy implementation,” Gobind said.
He said this during the 2025 Digital Ministry Service Excellence Recognition Ceremony here.
Gobind said Malaysia’s aspiration to become a competitive artificial intelligence (AI) nation would be meaningless without a transparent, secure and trusted digital environment.
To support this, he said, the government, through the Digital Ministry, is undertaking a comprehensive study on the proposed establishment of the Data Commission of Malaysia.
“The establishment of this data commission is critical to institutionalising holistic governance, regulation and oversight of the nation’s data ecosystem across both the public and private sectors,” he said.
“This policy measure is essential to close information security accountability gaps, mitigate data breach risks and build a sustainable foundation of digital trust capable of attracting global-scale next-generation technology investments.”
Gobind said the true engine driving these reforms remained the civil service.
“You are not merely implementers of public policy; you are the face, voice and reflection of a government interacting with its citizens,” he said.
“The nation’s strategic direction in the digital sphere will only be realised if civil servants act as efficient, transparent and agile facilitators capable of adapting to rapid technological change.”
At the ceremony, 63 staff members from the ministry and its agencies received the 2025 Excellent Service Award.
Gobind said the recognition was not a reason to lapse into complacency, but a benchmark demanding an even higher standard of commitment.
“Award recipients stand as pioneers of an authoritative administrative framework, tasked with ensuring that every strategic roadmap of the ministry translates into tangible benefits for the nation’s wellbeing,” he said.
