For the first time since its inception in 1998, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra will present a debut performance of Philip Glass’ Violin Concerto. Scheduled to be held on Saturday, 19 April 2025 at 8.00 pm at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), the concert will feature Charles Yang performing alongside the MPO.

This modern work has won enthusiastic appreciation in 26 countries around the world since its premiere in 1987 at New York’s Carnegie Hall. This is Glass’ first full-scale orchestral work and exhibits qualities associated with ‘a minimalist music’; rapidly repetitive melodic fragments, chugging rhythmic patterns, pulsing chords and simple harmonic progressions.

Grammy Award winner, Charles Yang will take centre stage to perform this work with the MPO. A recipient of the 2018 Leonard Bernstein Award, he was described as a musician who “plays classical violin with the charisma of a rock star” by the Boston Globe.

He has performed at many prestigious music festivals of Schleswig-Holstein, Aspen and Ravinia, and collaborated with luminaries such as Joshua Bell, Steve Miller and Jon Batiste. Yang is a member of an eclectic string trio called Time For Three which won a Grammy for its recording titled Letters for the Future.

The MPO will open the concert with Overture to La grotta di Trofonio composed by Antonio Salieri and will close it with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.3, nicknamed ‘Scottish’ and inspired from the composer’s trip to Scotland with hints of the brooding, misty land and the country’s folk music.

Leading the MPO in this concert is Austrian conductor Katharina Wincor who is a force on the podium and has established an international reputation.

Philip Glass’ Violin Concerto takes place Saturday, 19 April 2025 at 8.00 pm. Tickets for the performance are priced from RM229.
