KUCHING: Green Building Index (GBI), Malaysia’s pioneer and international green benchmark, is reinforcing its commitment to promoting green and sustainable development in the building and construction industry in Sarawak.
With the aim of enhancing outreach and strengthening its presence in the state, GBI participated in the Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association (SHEDA) Property Expo 2023 held on 14-16 July 2023 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.
Assoc. Prof. (Ind.) Ar. Sarly Adre Sarkum, GBI Board Chairman said GBI’s participation in the SHEDA Property Expo 2023 is part of its ongoing efforts to complement the Sarawak Government’s green and sustainability agenda.
Under the administration of Sarawak Premier YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, the Sarawak Government has shown great resolve in driving the green and sustainability agenda forward.

One of these is the certification of buildings under GBI’s internationally recognised rating tools.
Spearheaded by the Sarawak Government, there are currently 29 GBI projects registered throughout the state, with 18 projects already certified. These notable GBI-certified projects are the Sarawak Museum Campus and Heritage Trail, Tabung Haji Complex & Convention Hall, Tabung Haji Hotel, UNIFOR Complex, LCDA Tower, Sarawak Energy Berhad Building, Menara SEDC, University of Technology Sarawak, Ibraco & LHS Headquarters, HSL Tower, La Promenade Mall, Miri City Hall, Integrated Energy Hub, Wisma Kalulong, Tegas Digital Village, DCF-DCCI Complex, UNIMAS Student Pavilion and UCSI Hotel.
Ar. Sarly, who is also the Immediate Past President of the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), said: “By integrating sustainable principles into the fabric of Sarawak’s built environment, GBI is actively complementing the Sarawak Government’s efforts to transform the state into a hub of sustainable development.”
Since its establishment in 2009, GBI has certified more than 650 building projects nationwide covering 296.8 million square feet of total gross floor area.
These include projects by federal and state government ministries and agencies, international and national organisations and companies, public and private universities and individual residences.
“In line with Malaysia’s commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emission by 2050, GBI has reduced the carbon intensity for the nation by 1,736,000 tCO2e/annum through the greening of these projects,” said Ar. Sarly.
