Over 400 Israeli soldiers have died in ground operations in Gaza, military figures show. The number does not include those killed during the Hamas-led attacks on 7 October 2023, which left around 1,200 people dead, most of them civilians, and saw 251 hostages taken.
Israel’s response has since killed more than 52,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials. Vast areas of Gaza have been devastated, with many residents left homeless.
Hamas is still holding 59 hostages, 24 of whom are believed to be alive.
