Democratic Action Party (DAP) veteran Lim Guan Eng has urged authorities to initiate legal proceedings against Zaharuddin Muhammad, the PAS chief for Sungai Buloh and son-in-law of party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, over remarks deemed racially provocative.

Lim’s call follows a controversial post on social media where Zaharuddin allegedly suggested that Malaysia could have its first Chinese Prime Minister by the year 2058, in light of Lieutenant General Johnny Lim Eng Seng's historic promotion. Lim viewed this statement as not only racially insensitive but also an insult to the professionalism of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).

Though the original post had been deleted, its content drew public attention and sparked a backlash. Lim accused Zaharuddin of attempting to sow racial discord by framing the appointment of a non-Malay officer as a political threat rather than a moment of national pride. The DAP advisor also claimed that the remark undermined the integrity and sacrifices of non-Muslim Malaysians who have long served the nation with loyalty.

He further expressed concern over what he described as PAS’s increasingly divisive rhetoric, which he said fuels extremism and threatens the multi-ethnic fabric of Malaysian society. According to Lim, no public institution — including the military — is spared from what he characterized as inflammatory and racially targeted narratives originating from the party.

He insisted that such behaviour cannot be allowed to fester unchecked, stating that firm legal measures are necessary to curb growing intolerance and racial polarization. In his statement, Lim stressed that without accountability, the nation could risk spiraling into deeper division and instability driven by identity politics.

The controversy centres around the elevation of Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng to the rank of Lieutenant General, making him the first ethnic Chinese officer in Malaysian history to reach such a position. His promotion has been widely seen as a step forward for inclusivity and merit-based advancement in the country’s defence forces.

Despite the gravity of the accusations, Zaharuddin has yet to face formal charges. However, the incident has reignited debate over the role of race in Malaysian politics and the limits of political speech in a multicultural society.
