TAWAU: A security guard who filed a false police report claiming he had been robbed after a theft at his workplace, out of fear of losing his job, was ordered by the Magistrate’s Court here on Thursday to perform six months of community service.
Liman Ismail, 44, pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum.
The court also ordered him to enter into a RM1,000 good behaviour bond, without deposit, with two local sureties.
The father of four was charged with providing false information to a public servant, police investigating officer Nurul Amira Razali, by claiming that he had been robbed despite knowing the allegation was untrue.
He committed the offence at the Criminal Investigation Investigating Officer’s Office at the Tawau District Police Headquarters at about 9.44pm on Sept 7, 2026.
The charge was framed under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to six months, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, the complainant received a police report lodged by Liman at about 8.40pm on Sept 7, alleging that he had been robbed.
However, investigations revealed that the reported robbery had never occurred, and Liman subsequently admitted that the report was false.
In mitigation, National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) lawyer Jhassary P. Kang, representing Liman, appealed for a lighter sentence, citing it as his first offence. He also said his client had repented and promised not to repeat the offence.
When questioned by the court, Liman admitted that he had lodged the false report because he feared losing his job following a theft at his workplace, which had occurred while he was asleep and unaware of the incident.
Prosecuting officer ASP Nur Intan Jamrin urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a lesson to the accused.
