MANILA, Phlippines — Fiery head coach Yeng Guiao hopes he could repay Rain or Shine team owners Raymund Yu and Terry Que’s trust with a PBA championship soon.
Guiao just a few days back, signed a two-year contract extension, which ensures he will be handling the ROS franchise through 2030.
ROS’ long-time big bosses Yu and Que were both present when Guiao inked at the dotted line.
“This (Rain or Shine) has been my home in coaching,” Guiao said in Tagalog. “We treat each other like family with Rain or Shine management. “Very thankful to Boss Raymund (Yu) and Boss (Terry) for the extension of my contract.”
The 67-year-old Guiao knows as well that it has been 10 years since the Rain or Shine franchise tasted a championship when the team ruled the 2016 Commissioner’s Cup.
Now, the team carries practically a new set of players, with Gabe Norwood recently retiring, while other veterans from that championship squad like Chris Tiu, TY Tang, Jireh Ibanez, JR Quinahan, among others have either retired as well or are playing elsewhere.
“We want to repay the fans with hard work and double our efforts for them,” added Guiao, who is a seven-time PBA champion coach.
The Elasto Painters appear headed toward the right direction, considering that since Guiao’s return to the franchise in 2023, ROS has reached the semifinals in five of the last six conferences dating back to the 2023-24 season.
Before the Season 50 Governors’ Cup went on a break to give way to Gilas’ overseas tournaments, Rain or Shine managed to win four of its first six games to hold first place in Group B.
Guiao’s charges hope to sustain their gains and eye for their fifth straight win when they clash with the Barangay Ginebra KIngs anew on Oct. 9 as the tournament swings back to action once more at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
