The Sultan of Selangor has strongly objected to a proposal introducing guidelines for Muslims attending non-Muslim celebrations, warning that such measures could strain religious harmony in Malaysia.
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah expressed concern over the timing of the proposal, emphasizing that Malaysians are working towards fostering goodwill among different religious and ethnic groups to strengthen national unity.
“The controversy surrounding this issue has caused public unease and could disrupt the harmony that has long existed,” he stated in an official release from the Selangor Royal Office.
Highlighting Islam’s firm foundation in the Quran and Sunnah, the Sultan reassured that Malaysia’s adherence to the Sunni denomination has guided the Muslim community for generations. He dismissed concerns that attending non-Muslim events could weaken the faith of Muslims, asserting that they are well aware of their religious boundaries and capable of distinguishing between acceptable and prohibited practices.
The Sultan underscored the importance of religious tolerance in Malaysia’s diverse society while reaffirming Islam’s position as the religion of the federation under the Federal Constitution. However, he also urged Muslims, particularly in Selangor, to continuously deepen their religious knowledge, uphold Islamic teachings, and remain cautious of any actions that contradict their faith.
The Prime Minister recently affirmed that no new regulations or guidelines are needed to dictate how Muslims should behave at non-Muslim ceremonies held in places of worship. He stressed that Muslims already understand and respect religious boundaries.
In a joint statement, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) and the National Unity Minister also reiterated that any policies introduced must prioritize national unity and secure approval from the Cabinet.
This follows an earlier written parliamentary reply by the Religious Affairs Minister, indicating that the government was considering implementing guidelines for events involving Muslims at non-Muslim places of worship. The proposal had suggested requiring permission from religious authorities and ensuring that such events do not contain elements that could be deemed offensive to Islamic beliefs.
The issue has sparked widespread discussion, with many expressing concerns that such regulations could lead to unnecessary division in an already diverse society.
