KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian rally driver Gunaseelan Rajoo is making a return to international motorsport after a 15-year break, competing in the Mile Auto Rally Championship 2026 in Kunming, China, from April 20 to 26.
The comeback marks his first competitive outing since 2011, reviving a career celebrated for consistency and discipline on rally stages.
“This is a very special moment for me,” he said, adding that he had been looking forward to getting back behind the wheel for a long time.
“Kunming holds great memories for me, and to return here for such a prestigious event makes it even more meaningful,” he said in a statement today.
Previously nicknamed “Mr Consistent,” Gunaseelan earned his reputation driving cars such as the Proton Satria, later moving on to the Proton Putra 4WD Turbo and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX and X. He eventually claimed the Asia Pacific 2WD Championship title before stepping away from the sport.
Now, he will compete in a Volkswagen Polo Group N, tackling the challenging terrain of Yunnan Province. The rally is expected to attract more than 100 competitors, including over 20 international drivers, making this edition one of the most competitive to date.
Gunaseelan will be co-driven by Chong, popularly known as “Malay Chong,” whose experience is expected to give the Malaysian team an added edge.
Beyond the competitive aspect, his return also serves a broader purpose, promoting Malaysia internationally in line with Tourism Malaysia’s Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.
“I am honoured to represent Malaysia not just as a driver, but as an ambassador,” he said.
“This platform allows us to showcase Malaysia’s strengths—from tourism and healthcare to education—while building meaningful connections with our counterparts in China,” he added.
The rally will traverse Yunnan’s scenic landscapes, with Kunming, often called the “City of Eternal Spring,” serving as its hub.
Gunaseelan also expressed gratitude to his partners, including Batik Air Malaysia, which continues to enhance connectivity between Malaysia and China.
“I would like to thank all my sponsors and partners who made this possible in such a short time,” he said. “From logistics to planning, their support has been incredible. This is not just my journey—it’s a shared effort.”
Looking ahead, he remains optimistic about competing in more international events.
