With monsoon approaching, residents of Sector 17A Defence Colony in Gurugram have raised concerns over the delay in a sewer project, saying that dug-up roads, unfinished manholes and stalled construction have turned the locality into a safety hazard.
In a representation to CM Nayab Singh Saini, the Residents Welfare Association (RWA) has said the laying of a new pipeline in Lane 1A began on March 2, and the residents were informed that the project would be completed within six weeks and road resurfacing would be carried out before the onset of monsoon.
However, according to the RWA, work has come to a standstill for the past over a month, and the reasons being cited include shortage of labour, theft and equipment breakdowns.
The association alleged that the road remained unusable at several locations, making it difficult for residents to access their homes or park vehicles. The situation was particularly concerning for elderly residents, who formed a significant portion of the colony’s population.
RWA president Rakesh Jinsi said if the road restoration work was not completed before the rains, the colony could face severe inconvenience and mobility issues. “The project was supposed to be completed within six weeks, but residents have been living with dug-up roads and unfinished manholes for months. Many people can’t park their vehicles inside their homes, and senior citizens are facing difficulty,” he said.
The RWA has urged the government to ensure that work on dug-up manholes is completed within three weeks, accumulated soil is removed from roads to prevent clogging of stormwater drains, and the remaining work is deferred until after monsoon.
