A 33-year-old female senior account executive at a private company in Gurugram committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of her office building, located in the Sector 65 area. The family of the deceased alleged that she committed suicide due to harassment by her husband.
An FIR for abatement to suicide was registered against the husband and in-laws of the deceased woman at the Sector 65 police station. The police arrested the husband late in the evening on Thursday from Gurugram. The accused, Amit Singhal, a resident of Meerut, is a chartered accountant (CA) by profession.
According to the police, the deceased, identified as Jagriti Bari Singhal, a native of Dehradun, was working for the company on an annual package of around Rs 12 lakh. Police said no suicide note was recovered from the scene.
On Wednesday afternoon, around 2 pm, she jumped off the fifth floor of her office in the Worldmark building while talking on mobile phone. After receiving information, a police team reached the spot and rushed her to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Jagriti had a love marriage with CA Amit Singhal in November 2023. She had differences with her husband over every-day commute between Gurugram and Meerut for work. The deceased’s family has accused Amit of torture.
“Jagriti was subjected to mental and physical abuse at her in-laws’ house since her marriage. Her husband forcibly kept her entire salary and did not give her any money for expenses. She was brutally beaten over trivial household chores, and minor disputes,” said Hardik Bari, brother of the deceased.
“Her husband and in-laws had been harassing my daughter since her marriage. This constant pain and domestic violence left Jagriti mentally devastated, forcing her to take this horrific step,” said Shalu, mother of the deceased.
“We handed over the body to kin after the postmortem examination on Thursday, and further probe is underway,” said SHO Rambir.
