The Wey G9 is GWM’s flagship premium new energy MPV in Malaysia and is locally assembled at EP Manufacturing’s plant in Pegoh, Melaka.

GWM Malaysia has handed over a locally assembled GWM Wey G9 Hi4 PHEV to the Ministry of Finance for evaluation under a Proof of Concept programme conducted in collaboration with SPANCO Sdn Bhd.

The vehicle was received by Datuk Alan Abdul Rahim, Undersecretary of the Public Asset Management Division at the Ministry of Finance, together with representatives from MOF and SPANCO.

GWM says the programme will allow the Wey G9 and its plug-in hybrid technology to be evaluated under real-world government fleet use.

The company has not disclosed how long the evaluation will run or whether it could lead to any future fleet procurement.

The Wey G9 is GWM’s flagship premium new energy MPV in Malaysia and is locally assembled at EP Manufacturing’s plant in Pegoh, Melaka. It was launched here in January 2026 at RM 269,800 on-the-road without insurance.

Its Hi4 plug-in hybrid system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with front and rear electric motors, producing a combined 442PS and 642Nm.

Power is sent to all four wheels through GWM’s intelligent electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system.

A 44.2kWh battery provides up to 170 km of electric-only driving range on the NEDC cycle, while GWM quotes a combined driving range of more than 1,000km.

The Wey G9 supports AC charging at up to 6.6kW and DC fast charging at up to 60kW, with a 30% to 80% charge taking a claimed 26 minutes.

Despite being a seven-seat luxury MPV weighing more than 2.8 tonnes, the G9 is claimed to complete the 0-100km/h sprint in 5.7 seconds. It measures 5,050mm long, 1,985mm wide, and 1,900mm tall, with a 3,085mm wheelbase.

GWM positions the model around its “First Class for All” philosophy, with the seven-seat cabin using a 2+2+3 layout and a stronger emphasis on second-row comfort.

The company says participation in the MOF evaluation also forms part of its wider localisation efforts in Malaysia, which extend beyond CKD production to developing local capabilities, expanding its network, and introducing more of its new energy vehicle technology to the market.

The Wey G9 was the first locally assembled GWM model of its type to be produced in Malaysia, with the company also positioning the Pegoh facility as part of a broader Asean manufacturing and export strategy. Malaysian-built units have already been exported to Thailand.
