The GWM Wey G9 Hi4 PHEV might become the next government fleet cars for ministers.
GWM Malaysia has announced its participation in a Proof of Concept (POC) evaluation program involving the locally assembled (CKD) GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV, following an official vehicle handover to the Ministry of Finance (MOF) in collaboration with fleet management concessionaire SPANCO Sdn Bhd.

The flagship plug-in hybrid executive multi-purpose vehicle was formally received by YBhg. Datuk Alan Bin Abdul Rahim, Undersecretary of the Public Asset Management Division (PAM) under the Ministry of Finance, alongside senior representatives from MOF and SPANCO. The initiative marks an important milestone in GWM’s long-term localisation journey in Malaysia, creating an avenue for the brand’s flagship new energy vehicle technology and luxury appointments to undergo rigorous evaluation in authentic government administrative duty cycles.
Evaluating First-Class Luxury in Real-World Public Fleet Duty
Representing GWM’s top-tier executive luxury division, the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV is designed around the concept of “First Class for All,” blending high-end passenger comfort with advanced chassis stability and low-emissions efficiency:
- Executive Seating Configuration: Accommodates seven passengers in a 2+2+3 seating arrangement featuring second-row Zero Gravity captain chairs upholstered in premium Nappa leather, incorporating 10-point massage programs, integrated ottoman footrests, and ventilation.
- Onboard Refrigerator: Incorporates an independent compressor-driven 12.5-litre dual-opening refrigerator operating between 0°C and 50°C, capable of sustaining cooling or heating cycles for up to 24 hours even after the vehicle is shut down.
- Intelligent Digital Cabin: Driven by a large 15.6-inch multimedia interface, a 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster, and a full-color head-up display running the intuitive GWM Coffee OS ecosystem.

The government fleet trial will enable transport planners and fleet evaluators to assess how well the luxury PHEV balances VIP protocol passenger comfort against demanding day-to-day government travel routines.
Understanding GWM’s Hi4 Intelligent Hybrid 4WD Architecture
Central to the vehicle’s evaluation is GWM’s proprietary Hi4 (Hybrid Intelligent 4WD) architecture. Unlike conventional dual-motor hybrid layouts that restrict one electric motor solely to generation duty and mount the other exclusively on one axle, the Hi4 system employs a synchronized three-power-source architecture:
- Front-Axle Integration: Unites a dedicated hybrid petrol engine—in this application, a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit—with a multi-mode electromechanical transmission and a front electric motor.
- Dedicated Rear-Axle Motor: Houses a separate high-efficiency electric drive motor delivering direct mechanical propulsion to the rear wheels without requiring a heavy conventional mechanical prop shaft.
- Intelligent Torque Vectoring Control (iTVC): Proprietary algorithmic control software actively assesses surface grip, steering inputs, and throttle demand in real time, redistributing dynamic torque between the front and rear axles within 10 milliseconds to maximize all-weather traction and handling stability.

The operational architecture allows the WEY G9 to provide the sure-footed handling, climbing capability, and wet-weather stability of all-wheel drive, while delivering the low fuel consumption and running costs typically associated with two-wheel-drive hybrid vehicles.
In metropolitan driving, the vehicle operates predominantly in pure electric or series hybrid modes, reserving direct engine mechanical drive for high-speed expressways or high-load acceleration.
Tailored Architecture Across the Wider GWM Lineup
GWM’s Hi4 technological family is calibrated into three application-specific layouts to suit differing vehicular and terrain demands:
- Standard Hi4 (Urban and Crossover SUVs): Optimized for daily city commuting, light trail excursions, and wet asphalt confidence. Utilizes a 1.5-litre engine paired with two electric motors and a 4-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) that shifts dynamically across nine operational modes, powering models like the Haval Xiaolong Max and Haval Raptor.
- Hi4-T (Off-Road and Heavy SUVs): Engineered for rigorous off-roading, heavy towing, and rock crawling without sacrificing hybrid efficiency. Employs a longitudinal 2.0-litre or 3.0-litre turbocharged engine paired with a 9-speed hybrid automatic gearbox, an integrated electric motor, a traditional mechanical propeller shaft, and physical locking differentials, deployed across the GWM Tank 300, 400, and 500 series.
- Hi4-Z (Ultra-Long-Range Performance): Geared toward high-performance luxury vehicles demanding extended zero-emissions capability. Incorporates a large battery pack of roughly 59 kWh alongside high-output drive units, generating upwards of 800 hp while delivering over 200 km of pure-electric driving range on selected high-tier Tank and Wey models.

Advancing Local Assembly and National Green Mobility
The government POC trial underscores GWM Malaysia’s broader investments in local manufacturing, retail network expansion, and technology transfer.
By submitting the locally assembled WEY G9 to official fleet vetting alongside SPANCO and the Ministry of Finance, GWM demonstrates the practical feasibility of adopting domestically built plug-in hybrids for official service, supporting national sustainability targets while providing reliable, electrified VIP transportation.
