Kota Kinabalu: Han Loong Taekwondo Club made a strong impact in their maiden appearance at the recent CK Classic International Open Taekwondo Championship held at the Juara Sports Complex in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.
The newly formed club with 10 members in the team returned with one gold, three silvers and six bronze in the four day competition.
Noah Gabriel Wilfred Intang delivered their first ever gold in the 12-14-year-old boys’ individual Poomsae event.
The silver medals were won by Naveen Jimmy Singh and Nur Amirah in the mixed poomsae event 15-17 years old ; Izzyayumi, Sonia Aisha and Nurfasha (female team poomsae 15-35 years old) and Joel Veritinus Santiong (light weight male kyorugi 15-17 years old).
The bronze came from Kelvin Chaw (male individual poomsae 15-17 years ); Izzyayumi (poomsae individual girls 15-17 years ); Kelvin Chaw, Naveen Jimmy Singh and Rouel Dingin (male team poomsae 15-35 years); Yong Feng Yue, Nurul Arissa Muhd Ismail and Eva Bernadette Wilfred Intang (girls’ team poomsae 12-14 years ); Noah Gabriel and Eva Bernadette (mixed poomsae 12-14 years old) and Verity Veritinus (kyorugi light weight girls 15-17 years ).
In a statement released on Thursday, the club was delighted with the results and congratulated the athletes.
It said that for the team to return with the winning gold in addition to the silver and bronze was a bonus as the team was only expected to win a medal of any colour.
The management also praised the coaching team led by Master Ervin Ambu.
Meanwhile, Kelvin Chaw and Zulaikha Amira are currently competing in the the Borneo Cup International Taekwondo ((W.T.F) Championship in Kuching that started on Thursday.
The duo representing Sabah State United Taekwondo (WTF) Association are accompanied by Ervin and Ezra Leong.
