A Chinese motorist has drawn widespread praise online after displaying a handwritten “Happy Deepavali to all Malaysians” sign on his car window, sparking warm reactions about multicultural unity.
A MOTORIST has won praise online for a simple yet thoughtful Deepavali greeting that has been hailed as a heartwarming example of Malaysian unity.
A video shared on Threads showed a handwritten message on the rear window of a blue car, reading: “Happy Deepavali to all Malaysians”.
The user who shared the video praised the vehicle owner, describing the gesture as a reflection of the country’s multicultural spirit.
“Salute to this uncle. The car owner is a Chinese uncle. Truly 1 Malaysia,” the user wrote.
The message struck a chord with other users, many of whom said celebrating one another’s festivals was part of what made being Malaysian special.
“At the end of the day… we are all familyyyyyy,” one user commented.
Another said the ability of Malaysians to celebrate different festivals together made life in the country more meaningful, while expressing concern that political differences sometimes undermined this sense of togetherness.
“As Malaysians, we celebrate everything. This is what makes the journey more enjoyable and meaningful. At times, it’s these useless politics which divide us,” the user wrote.
Another commenter jokingly offered to help the motorist if he received a summons from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) over the sign.
“We are Malaysians, uncle. If JPJ issues you a summons, pass it to me, I’ll pay it,” the commenter said.
The wording of the greeting also caught another user’s attention, with the commenter pointing out that the motorist had deliberately extended his wishes to Malaysians of all backgrounds.
“And the uncle mentioned ‘all Malaysians’ because he knows that Malaysians are also getting a holiday for Deepavali and going back to their hometowns. HAHAHA,” the user wrote.
However, the gesture also prompted a safety-related observation, with one commenter questioning whether the handwritten sign obstructed the driver’s rear view.
“Aww, the intention is good, but the rear view is already blocked. That’s against the law. I hope the uncle notices,” the user wrote.
