Hannah Yeoh: Paralympic Gold Medallist Cheah Liek Hou to Get RM1 Million Cash & Lifetime RM5k/mth Allowance

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has announced that national Paralympic shuttler Cheah Liek Hou will be receiving a RM1,000,000 cash reward from the Government for winning Malaysia’s first gold at the Paris 2024 Paralympics yesterday (2 September).

As we shared earlier today, Cheah made Malaysians around the world proud by being victorious in the men’s SU5 (physical disability) singles final at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

The 36-year-old para-athlete defeated Indonesia’s badminton player, Suryo Nugroho, in straight sets with 21-13 and 21-15 scores at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.

This is the second time Cheah won gold as he also did so at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.

Congratulating Cheah on the incredible feat, Yeoh also announced that the national hero with be receiving a lifetime allowance of RM5,000/month through the Olympic Sports Incentive Scheme (SITO).

The Youth and Sports Minister asserted,

“So, so, so proud of Cheah Liek Hou for delivering Malaysia’s first gold at the Paralympic Paris 2024. So wonderful to have Negaraku being played at the Paralympic Games.

“As promised, Liek Hou will receive a RM1,000,000 reward from the Government and a lifetime allowance of RM5,000 per month through SITO.”

Yeoh also urged Malaysians to watch the movie ‘GOLD’ directed by Adrian Teh on Cheah’s story.

Besides that, Yeoh also had a special message for Cheah, saying that his father would’ve been very proud of him for winning his second Paralympic Gold.

The Youth and Sports Minister said,

“Liek Hou, I know your father would have been very proud of you for winning your second Paralympic gold!

“This is another world-class athlete who is a go-getter, we never had to worry about his mental strength. Thank you for making every Malaysian proud.
