Hari Raya Aidilfitri, commonly known simply as Eid al-Fitri, is one of the most significant obsevances celebrated by Muslims around the world. It marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, and serves as a time for spiritual reflection, increased devotion, and complete gratitude to Allah for the strength to endure this period of self-discipline. Beyond its religious significance, this Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a festival characterised by celebration and joyful spirit of togetherness that resonates the families and communities alike.

The environment is the most important to spark the spirit of celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri. As annual practice of our family ‘gotong royong’ to give our house a good cleaning and makeover to create a warm yet lively atmosphere, and add decorations to spruce it up.

This preparation commence well in advance, with my family engaging in various activities that reflect the festivite spirit. Our homes are decorated & cleaned meticulously, symbolising the purification of the soul achieved through performing fast and special prayers.

Thus, the act of decorating reflects the desire to welcome families, relatives, neighbours and guests graciously and to celebrate the blessings that come with renewal and forgiveness. These gatherings create an atmosphere of warmth & reinforcing the families bond.

The culinary aspect of Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a celebration in itself. My family gather to prepare a wide array of traditional dishes that are often carefully handed down through generations. Dishes such as rendang, ketupat & lemang become staples at the dining table, accompanied by an assortment of sweet & delicacies. The act of cooking reflects the importance of Malaysian hospitality and culture.

With the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri, it is a chance for families & communities to strengthen bonds & reconnect. It's even better that we no longer have to meet up virtually and have F2F gathering instead. Let's take this time as an opportunity to spend time together.
