Harimau Malaya remain optimistic against Thailand in the 2026 ASEAN Cup despite losing midfielder Endrick Dos Santos to injury, says Tan Cheng Hoe
HARIMAU MALAYA remain cautiously optimistic of securing a positive result in their 2026 ASEAN Cup clash against Thailand at Rajamangala Stadium on Saturday despite losing experienced midfielder Endrick Dos Santos to injury.
Interim Harimau Malaya head coach Tan Cheng Hoe said he has great respect for the War Elephants, describing Thailand as one of the strongest teams in Southeast Asia.
“We know Thailand have plenty of skilful and technically gifted players. Of course, we have come here aiming for a good result, and I believe in my players. It will also be a valuable experience for them to compete in a match of this type of tournament,” he told reporters before the team’s training session at Rajamangala Stadium today.
The 58-year-old Kedahan, however, admitted that his players are not yet at their peak physical condition after playing two matches in quick succession.
“We are not fully prepared physically because of the demanding schedule, but that should not be an excuse. We are determined to achieve a positive result here,” he said.
On Endrick’s injury, Tan acknowledged it was a significant blow to the team and said he is working hard to identify a suitable replacement for the 34-year-old midfielder.
“Of course, the team spirit remains very good. Endrick has also stayed with the squad to lend his support, which has helped maintain a strong sense of unity among the players,” he said.
Harimau Malaya opened their 2026 ASEAN Cup Group B campaign with a 2-1 victory over Myanmar before thrashing Laos 4-0, putting themselves in a strong position to reach the semi-finals after failing to progress beyond the group stage in the 2024 edition.
Meanwhile, Thailand head coach Anthony Hudson said his players are eager to play in front of their home supporters on Saturday.
“The players are well prepared and in good physical condition. Malaysia have been playing well, so we are expecting a closely contested match,” he said.
Thailand began their 2026 ASEAN Cup campaign with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Laos in Vientiane on Sunday.
