The accused doctor, who was booked for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old minor girl at the LNJP Civil Hospital in Kurukshetra, was sent to police remand for two days on Monday.
As per the Kurukshetra police, Doctor Shailendra Kumar was produced before a court. He was also taken to the OPD room at the civil hospital, where he had allegedly sexually assaulted the minor to recreate the scene.
Dr Shailendra had retired from Civil Hospital Kaithal, but he was re-engaged as a consultant at the LNJP Civil Hospital. He had worked in the Civil Hospital, Kurukshetra as well during his service.
Kurukshetra police spokesman said that on May 31, a complaint was received from a Kurukshetra resident, in which he stated that on May 29, he went to the LNJP civil hospital to get medicine for himself and his daughter. The complainant and the girl were admitted to different wards. The girl told her father that the accused doctor had sexually assaulted her, following which a case under the POCSO Act was registered at the KUK Police Station.
After the matter came to light, ACS (Health) Dr Sumita Misra had terminated the services of the consultant doctor.
SHO KUK Police Station Surinder Sidhu said, “The father of the minor girl, in his complaint, had stated that the doctor had sexually assaulted the minor girl. He touched her private parts and sexually assaulted her. The accused doctor was arrested and taken to the civil hospital for recreation of the scene. There were complaints against him in the past, too. The incident happened on May 29, and if it comes to light that any other staff member had tried to help him in hushing up the matter, then appropriate action will be taken against the person as well. Further investigation into the matter is on.”
Meanwhile, the Haryana State Commission for Women (HSCW) Chairperson Renu Bhatia said “We were shocked to hear about the incident that happened at the Civil Hospital. The commission has taken cognizance, has sent a letter to ACS (Health) Dr Sumita Misra to hold a detailed investigation into this matter, and furnish an action taken report. The accused doctor has faced similar allegations in the past, too, and yet he was re-engaged by the department. Action should be taken against the officials who support such people and re-engage them after retirement.”
