Haryana government’s 100 per cent interest waiver scheme on pending property tax dues has gained momentum in Karnal, with residents depositing Rs 90 lakh within just a week of the scheme’s launch.
With this, the total property tax collection in the current financial year has reached Rs 6.89 crore. Last year, the total tax collection stood at Rs 29.50 crore. Officials of the Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) are hopeful that more residents will come forward to clear their dues by availing the benefits of the scheme before the June 30 deadline. The government announced this scheme on May 15, but it was implemented from May 17.
Mayor Renu Bala Gupta urged residents to take advantage of this golden opportunity by clearing their outstanding property tax on time. “Under the scheme, complete interest exemption has been granted on property tax dues pending from the financial year 2010-11 to 2024-25, so residents can avail the benefits,” she said.
Highlighting the government’s commitment towards public welfare, the Mayor said the state government led by Nayab Singh Saini is focused on providing economic relief to citizens while accelerating the pace of urban development in Karnal. “The waiver would not only reduce the financial burden on residents but also strengthen the MC’s ability to improve civic infrastructure across the city,” said Mayor Gupta.
She clarified that citizens will not receive the waiver automatically. To avail the benefit, property owners must complete a technical verification process through the MC’s property tax dues payment portal.
Appealing to residents, the Mayor emphasised that property tax remains the backbone of city development and maintenance.
“Roads, streetlights, parks and sanitation services depend on timely tax collection. Citizens should fulfil their responsibility by paying dues and contributing towards a cleaner and better Karnal,” she said.
Regional Taxation Officer Ankush Parashar and Tax Superintendent Gagandeep Singh said that residents must self-certify their property details online. The system will apply the interest waiver only after the data has been successfully self-certified on the portal.
KMC officials warned that property owners failing to clear dues within the stipulated period would face a hefty interest charge of 1.5 percent per month after June 30. Besides, the KMC is preparing to take strict action against major defaulters, including sealing of properties for non-payment.
