A 30-year-old PG Diploma student drowned in a swimming pool at the Sports University of Haryana under mysterious circumstances late on Thursday night.

The police sent the body to the mortuary at the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination and launched an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, the university administration constituted a three-member committee to probe the matter.

The deceased has been identified as Nishant, a resident of Palwal district. He was pursuing a PG Diploma in Cricket at the university and had reportedly gone to the swimming pool on Thursday night.

Family members reached Sonepat and alleged foul play in the incident.

According to available information, Nishant was staying in the university hostel and had gone to the swimming pool late at night when he reportedly drowned in the deep end of the pool. The swimming pool is around 18 feet deep and had approximately 15 feet of water at the time of the incident.

Sources said the swimming pool had resumed operations earlier this week on Tuesday. Nishant was known to be a good swimmer and regularly used to dive into the pool. Sources further claimed that the swimming coach, along with several boys and girls, was present at the pool when the incident occurred.

University staff later pulled him out of the pool and rushed him to the Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

After receiving information about the incident, the Rai Police reached the spot and informed the family members. Nishant is survived by his wife and a son.

Ashok Kumar, Vice Chancellor of the university and former DGP of Uttarakhand, described the incident as extremely unfortunate.

“He was a good swimmer, which makes the incident even more concerning. The swimming coach was also present there,” he said.

Taking serious note of the matter, the university constituted a three-member inquiry committee led by Rajender Garg to investigate the incident.

“The committee will examine all possible angles and no one found guilty will be spared,” the Vice Chancellor said, adding that the police were also conducting an independent investigation.

Meanwhile, the Rai Police handed over the body to the family after the post-mortem examination on Friday.
