Polling for the election of the chairperson and ward members of the Uklana Municipal Committee on Sunday remained largely peaceful, with voter turnout at around 76% as of the latest reports. Out of a total of 15,507 registered voters, 11,744 votes had been cast.
Officials said final polling figures will be released after the voting process concludes.
Four candidates are contesting the chairperson’s post: BJP nominee Nikita Goyal and independents Dr. Sonia Batra, Meenu Rani and Reema Soni, whom the Congress is supporting.
The municipal body comprises 16 wards, but elections were held in 15 wards as the representative from Ward No. 7, Abhay Ram, was elected unopposed.
During the polling process, brief protests erupted at booths two and three over allegations of bogus voting. BJP candidate Nikita Goyal’s father-in-law, Srinivas Goyal, along with party workers, arrived at the site alleging irregularities.
The district administration had put in place extensive security arrangements to ensure peaceful voting. Booths three and 13 were declared hypersensitive, with additional security forces deployed as a precaution.
