Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim has voiced strong disapproval over what he described as attempts to intimidate the Federal Government regarding the contentious 40 percent revenue entitlement claimed by Sabah. He cautioned that such tactics could undermine national unity and the principles of constitutional governance.
Hassan expressed concern that certain leaders were using political pressure to influence legal proceedings involving the Federal Government’s decision to appeal a recent Kota Kinabalu High Court ruling. That court had recognized Sabah’s constitutional right to receive 40 percent of federal revenue derived from the state — a right allegedly neglected for nearly five decades.
The veteran lawmaker said he sympathized with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration, which, according to him, is being unfairly threatened over a legal matter that should follow due judicial process. He described such threats — including suggestions of ministerial resignations should the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) proceed with an appeal — as a form of political blackmail that Malaysia has not seen before.
Hassan emphasized that the AGC has every right to examine the legal basis of the High Court’s ruling and to pursue an appeal if deemed necessary. Blocking or politicizing this process, he warned, would violate the spirit of the rule of law.
He also reminded that in the 2026 Federal Budget, Sabah had received the highest allocation among all Malaysian states, including those in the Peninsula such as Terengganu, Kelantan, Perlis, and Kedah — a reflection, he said, of the Federal Government’s continued commitment to equitable development.
Highlighting the proper legal path, Hassan noted that cases originating in the High Court can be appealed to the Court of Appeal and ultimately the Federal Court. If the High Court’s reasoning stands firm, he said, the appellate courts will naturally uphold it. He further pointed out that Articles 112C and 112D of the Federal Constitution govern the matter, meaning the Federal Court alone holds the final authority on constitutional interpretation.
Hassan warned that using “politics of intimidation” to pressure the government over judicial decisions could set a dangerous precedent and threaten Malaysia’s federal framework. He called for calm, patience, and respect for institutional processes, stressing that only through lawful, transparent, and constitutional channels can such disputes be resolved in a manner that preserves national integrity and public trust.
