POLICE arrested the hawker who created a stir when he used a racial slur against the Indian community and his wife in Kota Warisan, Sepang yesterday.
According to reports in Sinar Harian, Sepang deputy police chief, G K Shan Gopal, said the man in his 60s was released on police bail, while his wife, also an Indonesian citizen in her 50s, was remanded under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
He said the woman was found to have overstayed.
The investigation is still ongoing to identify the motive behind the racial slur incident.
"We have recorded the statements of seven witnesses to assist in the investigation," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Earlier, the corn seller who sparked controversy after displaying a racially charged sign apologised, especially the Indian community, for his actions that could disrupt national harmony.
The Minister of National Unity, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, stated in a post on X that the trader has also promised not to repeat the act in the future. - February 18, 2025
