Hayden Panettiere’s jewelry has already been pawned off after her death, according to her former fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko.
Panettiere, known for starring in TV shows Nashville and Heroes, died August 16 of an accidental drug overdose. She was 36.
In a new court filing, Klitschko requested temporary guardianship of the actor’s estate on behalf of their 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, and shared his concerns that Panettiere’s belongings have been mishandled since she died in August.
Documents filed Monday read that Klitschko “believes that a non-family member previously connected to Hayden sold certain items belonging to Hayden, believed to include jewelry, to a pawn shop,” according to Entertainment Weekly
Klitschko, 50, said that the pawn shop has refused to disclose specific information about the items without police contact — leading to his worries that remaining items could be “sold, transferred or otherwise rendered unrecoverable.”
Klitschko’s petition comes after another reported dispute over her jewelry broke out after her death.
According to the Greenville County coroner’s report, the Ice Princess star was wearing “stud type earrings” at the time of her death that were removed during her autopsy.
The report said that the earrings could not be released until Panettiere’s parents, Lesley Vogel and Skip Panettiere, came to an agreement about the items.
One parent wanted the jewelry mailed to them in North Carolina, while the other requested the earrings be sent to their address in California, Page Six reported at the time.
“Both parties were informed that until they could reach an agreement regarding the decedent’s personal effects that they would not be released,” the coroner’s report said. It is still not known which parent ended up with the earrings.
Kaya is the sole beneficiary of her mother’s estate.
Klitschko, who was granted full custody of Kaya in 2018, said in his petition that it is “urgent and essential” that he be legally appointed the temporary guardian of his daughter’s assets.
“Without an immediate appointment for these purposes, there is a high probability that property belonging to Hayden’s Estate may be lost, damaged or dissipated before a duly appointed personal representative can be in place to protect it,” his filing said.
The initial document said that before Panettiere’s death, she and Klitschko hired security to protect her home after an unnamed person gained unauthorized access.
Klitschko said in the petition that the same person would try to “misappropriate” property belonging to her estate. He also believed that “non-family members previously connected to Hayden have accessed and destroyed Hayden’s emails.”
A hearing on the issue is scheduled for Thursday.
