KLIA warns of heavier traffic and full parking during the F1 weekend, urging race-goers to use public transport and plan their journeys in advance.

PETALING JAYA: Visitors heading to the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) from Oct 2 to 4 are advised to use public transport as traffic and vehicle movements around Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) are expected to increase significantly during the race weekend.

KLIA said more than 200,000 spectators were expected at SIC over the three-day event, with daily crowds projected to exceed 100,000.

Parking at KLIA Terminal 1 and the KLIA Long Term Car Park is also expected to reach full capacity early each day.

“Race-goers are strongly advised not to drive to KLIA with the intention of parking there to travel to SIC, and to plan alternative arrangements,” it said in a statement.

Visitors are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and use Express Rail Link (ERL) services, including KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit, as well as e-hailing services to reach KLIA Terminals 1 and 2.

Free shuttle bus services to SIC will also be available from KLIA Terminal 2, the KLIA Long Term Car Park and Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA.

Meanwhile, air passengers travelling through KLIA during the F1 weekend are advised to allow additional time for their journeys, with heavy traffic expected on major roads leading to the airport.

Police will implement traffic diversions from 8am to 11pm daily throughout the three-day event.

Road users are advised to follow directions from the authorities and use alternative routes where necessary.

KLIA also urged passengers and race-goers to check the latest traffic and travel advisories issued by KLIA, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and SIC before starting their journeys.

It said it would continue working with relevant authorities and stakeholders to facilitate traffic flow and prioritise the smooth movement of passengers throughout the race weekend.
