The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has been granted approval by the Attorney-General Chambers to proceed with charging Tun Daim Zainuddin. However, the legal action has encountered a temporary setback due to the former finance minister's health issues. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki disclosed that the approval was received last week, but the execution of charges has been deferred as Daim is currently undergoing medical treatment in a private hospital. The notification of his admission came from his lawyer, prompting a pause in the legal proceedings.
Expressing concern for Daim's health, Azam Baki highlighted that the 86-year-old, also known as Che Abdul Daim Zainuddin, was admitted to the hospital before MACC obtained the necessary permission to move forward with the charges. While the specific reason for Daim's hospitalization remains undisclosed, it has become a crucial factor affecting the timeline of legal actions against him.
The anticipated charges against Daim are linked to the alleged failure to declare several properties jointly owned with his wife. Azam Baki pointed out that, if required, the MACC could consider bringing a judge to the hospital for the reading of charges, although this is viewed as a secondary option contingent on necessity and the individual's well-being.
The investigation into Daim originated from information obtained from the Pandora Papers, a leak exposing confidential documents related to wealthy and influential individuals worldwide using offshore services to conceal their wealth. This inquiry falls under the jurisdiction of Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 and Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
Notably, in December of the previous year, MACC had seized Menara Ilham in Kuala Lumpur, a property associated with Daim's family. As the legal proceedings await Daim's recovery, MACC remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing corruption and financial irregularities, with a particular focus on revelations stemming from the Pandora Papers. The ongoing scrutiny reinforces the importance of transparency and accountability in addressing high-profile financial matters.
