Heatwave alert escalates to Level 2 in Padang Terap

MetMalaysia issues a Level 2 heatwave warning for Padang Terap, Kedah, with 12 other areas across Peninsular Malaysia under a Level 1 alert status.

PADANG TERAP: The Malaysian Meteorological Department has escalated its heatwave warning for Padang Terap in Kedah to Level 2.

This status is declared when an area records a daily maximum temperature between 37°C and 40°C for at least three consecutive days.

Twelve other areas across Peninsular Malaysia are currently under a Level 1 heatwave alert.

The affected locations include the entire state of Perlis and several districts in Kedah: Baling, Sik, Pendang, Pokok Sena, Kubang Pasu, Langkawi Island, Kuala Muda and Bandar Baharu.

The alert also covers Penang’s Timur Laut district, Hulu Perak in Perak, and Rembau in Negeri Sembilan.

A Level 1 alert is issued when the maximum daily temperature reaches 35°C to 37°C for three days in a row.

MetMalaysia advised the public to refer to its official website for the latest daily hot weather status updates.

In a separate development, a moderate 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwest of Sumatra, Indonesia early today.

The agency reported the quake was centred 260 km southwest of Cilegon, Indonesia at a depth of 121 kilometres.

It confirmed there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia from the seismic event.
