THE HAGUE - More than 900 excess deaths were recorded in the Netherlands during a recent heatwave, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) said on Wednesday, reported Xinhua.

An estimated 911 excess deaths occurred between June 22 and July 5 compared with the expected number of deaths for the period, it said.

The southern and eastern regions, which experienced the highest temperatures during the heatwave, saw the largest rise in mortality, with 576 excess deaths. People aged 80 and above accounted for 547 of the excess deaths, representing the biggest increase among all age groups.

"The cause of death is unknown, but it is highly likely that the heat played a role. It is important to remain vigilant about the health effects of heat," RIVM said in a statement.

Older adults and people with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable during extreme heat, RIVM said, adding that higher levels of air pollution during the heatwave may have placed additional strain on vulnerable groups.

Data from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) showed that temperatures soared between June 22 and 28, with the highest recorded temperature reaching 39.4 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures have remained above seasonal averages in parts of the country. Since July 11, RIVM has activated the National Heat Plan in seven central and southern provinces, urging healthcare providers, caregivers and informal carers to provide additional support to vulnerable groups. - BERNAMA
