TAMBUNAN: Continuous heavy rain on Monday triggered a landslide and muddy flash floods in Kampung Sinungkalangan, leaving several vehicles stranded and partially blocking the main road.
Tambunan District Officer Prem G. Kitingan said the incident occurred at about 3pm after persistent rainfall damaged the roadside embankment and created hazardous conditions for road users.
Initial observations found that soil erosion brought down earth, vegetation and fallen trees, partially obstructing the road.
Fast-flowing muddy water carrying silt and small rocks also overflowed onto the roadway near several houses, causing some vehicles to become stranded while attempting to cross the flooded section.
Meanwhile, flash floods also inundated agricultural land in Kampung Kuala Namadan after the Pegalan River overflowed its banks at about 4pm.
According to the village’s Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), the floodwaters submerged paddy fields belonging to two local farmers, Denesius Untan and Peter Modisir.
The fast-moving water carried mud and sediment into the fields, raising concerns over possible damage to the paddy crops if water levels do not recede soon.
The JKKK conducted an initial assessment of the affected area, while local authorities are assessing the extent of the damage.
Motorists and villagers have been advised to exercise caution and avoid affected routes if possible.
Residents living in low-lying areas and near the Pegalan River have also been urged to remain vigilant as unstable weather conditions continue.
Authorities are monitoring the situation, while cleanup and repair works are being carried out to ensure public safety.
