SANDAKAN: Selected B40 children from 11 primary schools here received eyeglasses under the Prihatin Visi Programme launched by Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong.

The goal is to help prevent schoolchildren from having eye problems that can affect their learning. “The programme aims to assist 50 school children who have applied for assistance through their respective schools,” she said.

She said those selected can have their eyes examined and glasses made at the Pro-Vision Optic Shop in Bandar Kim Fung, whose services have been engaged for the programme.

The pupils will be taken to the optical shop by their parents or guardians.

She expressed gratitude to the schools and teachers for their collaboration and concern for the children’s eyesight.

She also emphasised the importance of maintaining good eye health.

“If your eyesight begins to blur, please go to the nearest optic shop or nearby clinics to have it checked,” she said.

Meanwhile, Angela, an optician, said roughly 10 pupils visited the shop and were found to be not only short sighted but also astigmatism.

“The advancement of technology and gadgets, as well as modern living habits, has resulted in enormous changes.

“Excessive use of electronic gadgets without protective measures will easily cause vision problems, especially in children aged 8 to 12, which will lead to rapid growth of myopia and astigmatism.

“Parents and teachers must therefore pay more attention to their children’s eye vision,” she said.

“If their eyesight starts to blur, they must have them examined as soon as possible and wear eye glasses to prevent further deterioration of their sight,” she added.
