Legendary British painter David Hockney, one of the most influential contemporary European artists, has died, leaving the world a wealth of bright, colourful and playful works.

Hockney was famed for using numerous formats, from traditional painting to digital art.

Working for more than seven decades, he used many formats, embracing digital art as much as traditional painting.

His most famous works include "The Splash," "A Bigger Splash," "Portrait Of An Artist (Pool With Two Figures)," "My Parents" and "Mr And Mrs Clark And Percy."

His depictions of swimming pools and distinctive interplay of light and colour became his trademark.

“David Hockney’s enduring legacy reflects his fundamental zest for life, his outstanding sense of humour, his immense generosity and his inquisitive curiosity,” says a statement issued on his death.

Hockney was born in Bradford, northern England, in 1937 and his early years were marked by scarcity after World War II.

After his first solo exhibition in the early 1960s, he moved to Hollywood and later lived alternately in Britain and California.
The US state offered him sunshine, colour and freedoms he had never experienced before, both personally and as an artist.

In 2018, one of his paintings broke the record for a living artist at auction. "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)" was sold for $90 million.

You can see many of his works on display in Europe and the US, including in London's Tate Britain, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

In further shows, fans in London can go to "David Hockney: A Year in Normandie and Some Other Thoughts about Painting" at the Serpentine North Gallery. It features his monumental panoramic frieze inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry. Admission is free.

In northern England, Salts Mill in Saltaire has a collection of Hockney's works, including the "20 Flowers for 2025" series. It runs through to January 2027.

In the US, New York's Pace Gallery is hosting "The Moon Room" exhibition, featuring works from recent years. Visitors can view 15 immersive digital landscapes depicting the night sky.

In Portland, Oregon, The Portland Art Museum offers "David Hockney: Works from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation." It features more than 200 works showing the artist's experiments with technology, perspective and colour.
