The son of Perlis Menteri Besar, Mohd Shukri Ramli, is set to face charges in the Kangar Sessions Court on 23 May related to the submission of false claims amounting to RM600,000, as reported by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

According to MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, Mohd Shukri’s son, a company owner, will be charged under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009 at 8 a.m. This section deals with offenses related to the submission of false claims.

Mohd Shukri’s son was initially detained by MACC on April 24 along with five other individuals to assist in investigations into the false claim case. He was subsequently released on MACC bail on April 26. This investigation highlights the MACC’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and ensure accountability in financial dealings within the public and private sectors.

In a related development, Mohd Shukri himself was questioned by the MACC for eight hours on April 30 regarding allegations of power abuse connected to infrastructure development projects in Perlis since 2022. He was also released on MACC bail following the interrogation. These allegations against the Menteri Besar indicate a broader investigation into potential misuse of power and financial misconduct within the state's administration.

The case involving Mohd Shukri and his son underscores the Malaysian government's commitment to tackling corruption at various levels, particularly among high-ranking officials and their associates. The ongoing investigations and upcoming court proceedings are part of a larger effort by the MACC to enforce anti-corruption laws and promote transparency.

In a separate case, a former political secretary to an opposition leader is scheduled to be charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on the same day at 8:30 a.m. The specific charges against the former political secretary have not been disclosed, but this case is indicative of the MACC’s broad mandate to investigate and prosecute corruption across the political spectrum.

These cases highlight the rigorous measures taken by the MACC to address corruption, regardless of the individuals' political affiliations or positions. By bringing such cases to court, the MACC aims to deter corrupt practices and reinforce the rule of law in Malaysia. The outcomes of these proceedings will be closely watched as they reflect the ongoing efforts to uphold integrity and accountability in the country's governance.
