SHAH ALAM – A police report has been lodged over the alleged abuse of Hope, an eight-year-old senior Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) community cat whose horrific injuries sparked nationwide outrage on social media, as animal advocates push for the perpetrator to be brought to justice.
The report was lodged on Wednesday (July 29), marking the first formal legal step in the case and paving the way for police investigations into the alleged act of animal cruelty.
As the initial rescue unfolded rapidly, neither Hope's primary feeder nor the first rescuer was able to identify the individual responsible.
Animal advocates are now attempting to obtain CCTV footage from nearby premises in hopes of providing investigators with crucial leads.
This act of violence has sent shockwaves through the local animal welfare community, bringing the vulnerabilities faced by outdoor street animals back into sharp focus.
The case first gained widespread public attention after social media erupted in outrage over reports that the toothless, affectionate community cat had suffered horrifying injuries to her hindquarters.
A swift public plea for medical assistance by Threads user @pherbies saw compassionate Malaysians pool their resources together, successfully raising enough funds to cover her emergency treatment and hospitalisation within just two hours.
While a generous local resident has already stepped forward to offer Hope a permanent, loving home once she fully recovers, her medical battle is far from over.
Clarifying the timeline of events surrounding the rescue, the informer behind the @pherbies account, known as Shaz speaking to Sinar Daily, revealed that she rushed to save Hope after finishing work on July 28, 2026.
Shaz was alerted to the situation by a viral Threads post alongside an urgent direct plea from another local feeder, as Hope was found within Shaz’s designated TNR and rescue coverage area.
Despite already taking care of two high-needs rescue cats, including Manggis who is currently awaiting surgery and Kacak Hensem who tested positive for Feline Leukemia Virus, Shaz felt an immediate obligation to intervene.
"A similar recent cruelty case in Cheras was still fresh in my mind, and it compelled me to step in, trusting that our community would support her," Shaz said.
Detailed medical examinations conducted at the veterinary clinic have since confirmed the horrifying extent of the physical trauma inflicted on the senior cat. Veterinary staff verified that Hope suffered a torn anus accompanied by active bleeding, as well as a severe bacterial infection with deep pus formation that left her unable to urinate or defecate on her own.
Although Hope is currently in stable condition, veterinary personnel emphasized that her long-term recovery and quality of life depend entirely on how her body responds over the next five critical days of intensive daily care, deep wound cleaning, and close monitoring.
As a dedicated TNR advocate, Shaz expressed deep distress over the incident, explaining that independent rescuers face severe financial and physical capacity limits that prevent them from bringing every homeless animal indoors.
She also mentioned that TNR remains the only humane and viable method to manage stray populations, cases of deliberate cruelty create alarming safety concerns for all outdoor community animals.
Despite the heartbreaking nature of the incident, Shaz expressed immense gratitude for the overwhelming unity and swift response shown by animal lovers across the country.
Shaz stated that while this act of cruelty is heartbreaking, the swift public support proves that compassion and hope still deeply exist within the Malaysian community.
