It was reported that Perak MCA has expressed its deepest regret and apologised to the Sultan of Perak and all Malaysians after the Jalur Gemilang and the Perak flag were mistakenly flown upside down at its headquarters in Ipoh, Perak.
Yes, flying the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, incorrectly is a legal offense that can lead to fines or jail time under Malaysian law.
Applicable laws and penalties are clearly set out in Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Minor Offences Act 1955 (Section 14), Penal Code (Section 504) and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Section 233).
Were those wrong displays happened due to oversight or accidents or it was intentional disrespect?
Are there widespread evidence or common social trend of Malaysians intentionally disrespecting the national flag?
For example, shopkeepers or workers rushing to hang decorations ahead of Merdeka Day and making mistakes without realizing it?
Do you think they all purposely want to make the mistakes?
To err is human, to forgive is divine.
Most of the time accidental flag errors are sometimes hyper-analyzed or weaponized online. Public figures or political groups amplify these mistakes on social media to generate nationalistic fervor, turning what was a simple human error into a massive public controversy.
Do not discount the possibility that these public figures or political groups deliberately seek to sow discord among Malaysians of different races, a well-documented political tactic known as diversion or scapegoating, to cover up for their weaknesses and failures in governing the country.
Politicians who deliberately exploit such incidents for political mileage certainly contribute to the division in our society.
But the Government must also take responsibility for its slow and inconsistent response.
When similar mistakes are met with very different consequences, the Government itself creates the perception of double standards.
Such selective treatment is contrary to the spirit of the rule of law.
It weakens confidence in the Government’s ability to enforce the law fairly and consistently, while giving extremists more room to inflame public sentiment.
The Jalur Gemilang is not a weapon to attack one another.
It is a reminder of shared struggles and shared dreams.
When did empathy, courtesy, and mutual respect become so rare in our society?
Hopefully, the Sultan of Perak will issue a guidance for Malaysians that genuine human errors should be corrected with guidance or warnings, rather than aggressive intimidation.
Spreading hatred is not patriotism — it’s a betrayal of the values our nation was built upon, and in many cases, it is a crime.
Government investigations, ministerial statements, and independent analyses consistently show that the vast majority of flag-related controversies in Malaysia stem from honest mistakes, administrative errors, or a lack of awareness regarding flag protocol, rather than deliberate malice or anti-national protest.
Even then, some politicians claim that of late, the disturbing trend of Malaysians disrespecting our national flag has become increasingly visible.
Increasingly visible of late?
So are corruption committed by politicians.

Or social media platforms caused it to spread rapidly and opportunistic politicians amplifed and magnified it?
In our hyper-connected political landscapes, digital platforms nowadays transform isolated, honest mistakes into volatile national controversies within hours.
Thus, it is the fervent hope of the public to pray that HRH Sultan of Perak issue a reminder to all politicians to tread carefully and responsibly, because this issue is not only about patriotism, but also about racial sensitivities that can easily be exploited.
