Halloween is one month when it’s culturally acceptable to frighten oneself half to death and obsess over every creak and shadow. And if there’s one name that still gives the spine of anyone who ever lived through India in the ’80s and ’90s the full-on heebie-jeebies, it’s the Ramsay Brothers. Since Halloween 2025 is not far, this appears to be the ideal time to immerse oneself in the universe of Ramsay Brothers movies.

The Ramsay Brothers are the icons when it comes to Indian horror movies. Their movies tended to have a simple pattern. They typically had a remote setting and a supernatural mystery, some unearthing of an ancient evil or cursed treasure or somesuch. But these films were showcased with such a distinctive style with excellent (for its time, anyway) production design. The visual effects look dated, but people who watched these movies still nostalgically recall the typical flickering lights and hauntingly beautiful background scores.

Therefore, it’s difficult to overlook their cult classics if you are searching for movies to watch on Halloween. The best horror films from the Ramsay Brothers are perfect for a cosy, eerie movie marathon because they feature genuine frights. While they will not make it to the list of best horror movies of the 21st century, they are spooky in a fun and corny (some might say trashy) way and isn’t that Halloween all about?

Most of us get squeamish at the idea of stealing others’ art for our purposes. But Ramsay Brothers had no such misgivings. They freely borrowed material from, mostly, Hollywood movies. They lift ideas and even whole scenes with complete nonchalance. And you will find things in their movies that you are familiar with from popular Hollywood franchises.

Note: The movies are arranged in order of their release. We are not bothering with IMDb ratings here, for these movies do not have good scores by conventional standards. These internet kids turn their noses up at old movies like these that don’t have CGI and slick production value. But what do they know?
