Gone are the days of climbing the corporate ladder and achieving financial stability. Gen Z is changing the standards of success in their careers and lives. For this generation, success is beginning to look like flexibility, balance, and purpose.
The emergence of digital platforms, such as TikTok, Instagram, and Shopee, allows anyone to create their own side hustle. From starting a small business to becoming an influencer, these platforms empower creativity, entrepreneurship, and flexible work. As CNBC says, 50% of Gen Z aspire to start their own business and reject traditional workforce structures. The need for flexibility can be seen through work-from-home days and remote jobs as they are not just benefits but expected.
It is not a secret that work-life balance is the ultimate achievement for this generation. Newsweek describes that the key motivator for employees is work-life balance rather than pay. The spike in mental health awareness has contributed to this change of attitude among Gen Z as well. Many stories of Gen Z setting firm boundaries at work or even resigning due to the negative impact of their work on their well being surface the internet every so often. They are strict with their boundaries and prioritize their well being.
Personal fulfillment is another measure for success. Gen Z want a job that does not only pay but is also exciting and makes a difference in the larger scheme of things. They want to know that the work they do is meaningful, as Forbes states that 37% of Gen Z consider this as the most critical factor in their careers. They are less likely to trade their values and beliefs for their company, instead being drawn to organizations that align with their ethical understandings. They yearn to see the impact of their work and be recognized for their contributions.
The passion and enthusiasm of Gen Z is not something to be missed; however, employers risk losing these talents if they do not adapt to this flip of the script. Gen Z are setting new standards on what it means to have a successful career; after all, is life really just about work and making money, or is there something more to it?
