When it comes to everyday chores, creating a dedicated, organised space can be a lifesaver – especially if you run a busy household, are short on time, or simply want to spruce up a hardworking space.

Especially with warm summer days signalling widespread washing, a need for fresh bedding to ensure good sleep hygiene, fair-weather wardrobes, and higher turnover of cleaning supplies to keep up with demand.

And this is where you can make your dedicated space as aesthetically pleasing as it is practical, with sufficient cabinets, cupboards, stylish shelving, and clever storage ideas which bring everything together in a streamlined, calming, stress-free zone.

People increasingly expect more from the things they invest in, and practicality alone isn’t enough,” highlights Rachal Hutcheson, interiors expert at Sharps with three decades of experience in interiors and home transformation.

“With social media constantly showcasing inspiring spaces, it’s an expectation that the home reflects personality – and feels elevated.

“A laundry room is no longer just a functional corner of the home,” underlines Hutcheson. “It’s a place where organisation and thoughtful design come together to make everyday routines feel seamless and enjoyable.”

Indeed, a utility room is rarely a place where you, well, just do the washing. It’s also somewhere for moments of reflection; sorting and folding, ironing, listening to a favourite playlist… with the smell of freshly washed linen an instant mood booster.

And this is where planning comes into play, so everything’s in it’s place – and easily accessible.

“The most common issues we see are cramped layouts and inefficient storage,” says Hutcheson. “A well-planned laundry room should feel intuitive with everything in the right place, easy to reach and free from obstacles.”

She says proper storage and organisation are essential to success.

Clutter builds quickly and once it does, the room can become stressful to use. Built-in cabinetry is invaluable as it allows you to tailor every inch to your needs.”

Depending on your budget and layout, Hutcheson says tall cupboards can hide away mops, brooms and bulky cleaning tools; while internal drawers keep detergents and laundry products neatly contained.

“Open shelving with labelled baskets makes it quick to sort and find things. Simple additions like a pull-out ironing board, a dedicated drying rail or a bench seat with hidden storage can transform the way you use the space.”

In addition, versatile standing units with capacity for wicker baskets or stackable laundry baskets; anti-tangle clothes hangers and smart space saving ideas can be the workhorse you’ve been banking on to get the job done.

“The ideal laundry room should work hard for you while still feeling calm, bright and inviting,” suggests Hutcheson.

“Summer is the perfect moment to rethink the space as the season naturally encourages a fresh start and clear mindset.”

Moreover, she says to take time in designing the space beyond just the practical features, “with design details and finishing touches that elevate the everyday.”

Lighter colours, soft neutrals and warm woods can make even the smallest room feel spacious and uplifting, suggests Hutcheson.

“Consider pops of colour for added character through shelving in contrasting materials, framed prints, patterned pots or planters and woven rugs.”

Lighting is another key consideration, she points out. “When designing a space never forget the power of good lighting.”

“Natural light is ideal, but if that’s limited, warm, evenly distributed overhead lights, with strip lights across all shelving; and motion-censored lights within cupboards will ensure the room stays welcoming and functional.”
