USA fans let themselves believe after the USMNT opened its home World Cup campaign with a 4-1 demolition of Paraguay at SoFi Stadium.
The result was not just comfortable. It was historic, emotional, and loud enough online to feel like the start of something bigger.
Paraguay arrived with real credibility after a strong South American qualifying campaign, which made the scale of the American win hit even harder.

USA fans react after USMNT rout Paraguay in World Cup opener
As USMNT Only reminded fans, Paraguay had beaten Brazil and Argentina and owned one of South America’s best defensive records before losing 4-1 to the United States.
That context turned excitement into disbelief. One fan wrote: “Did we just dismantle a legitimately good team? I’m trying very hard not to completely lose my s___ here!!”
Another reaction focused on the statement made by Mauricio Pochettino’s side: “You sure had a point to prove!!! incredible.”
There was caution too. One fan warned against pushing the result too far, writing: “This was a historic performance for us, but if you are trying to equate the math to we are better than Brazil and Argentina, my guess is you are going to be horrible disappointed after the group stage.“
Others simply enjoyed the moment. One post read: “Team USA is on fire 🔥”
Another fan found a perfect pun for the scoreline: “The US has an Eagle as a mascot. Paraguay’s FIFA code is “PAR,” In golf terms, an Eagle is better than a Par.”
USMNT opener gives fans reason to dream
The match itself gave supporters plenty to celebrate. Damián Bobadilla’s own goal put the United States ahead after six minutes, before Folarin Balogun scored twice in the first half.
Paraguay pulled one back through Maurício, but Gio Reyna added a stoppage-time fourth to complete a 4-1 win.
The scoreline also made history, as the USMNT scored four goals in a men’s World Cup match for the first time.
Barack Obama had already posted: “Let’s go Team USA! Good luck at the World Cup,” and by full-time, the message looked perfectly timed.
USA now face Australia on June 19 at Seattle Stadium, while Paraguay play Türkiye the same day at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
The fan reaction felt big because the win was big. The challenge now is turning one dream night into a real tournament run.
