Victor Wembanyama gave the New York Knicks bench almost nothing back after Jeremy Sochan tried to get a reaction from him during Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
The moment came in the first quarter, with the San Antonio Spurs trying to keep their season alive and the Knicks attempting to close out the series.
It also carried an extra edge because Sochan is not just another Knicks player. He used to share the floor with Wembanyama in San Antonio.

Victor Wembanyama ignores Jeremy Sochan after New York Knicks bench heckling
In a clip shared by ESPN on X, Wembanyama was shown near the Knicks bench after a first-quarter sequence involving OG Anunoby.
Wembanyama tried to contest Anunoby’s attempt but could not come up with the block. As the Spurs star moved back up the floor, Sochan appeared to start talking from the New York bench.
The reaction from Wembanyama was the most telling part. He did not stop, answer back or give Sochan the exchange he seemed to be looking for. He simply walked away while the Knicks forward kept talking.
That calm response mattered because the clip had more than normal bench noise behind it. Sochan played with Wembanyama on the Spurs before later ending up with the Knicks, which made the heckling feel more personal than a random opponent trying to get under his skin.
Victor Wembanyama’s pressure makes Jeremy Sochan’s moment louder in Game 5
The Game 5 setting made every small exchange feel bigger. New York entered the night leading the NBA Finals 3-1 and sitting one win from its first championship since 1973.
San Antonio need a win at Frost Bank Center just to extend the series, so Wembanyama is already carrying the weight of an elimination game.
Sochan’s presence on the Knicks side added a rare layer to the matchup. His knowledge of Wembanyama from their Spurs days had already been part of the series conversation, and a bench-side jab during a Finals closeout game only sharpened that subplot.
The French star has dealt with physical play, boos from traveling Knicks fans, and constant attention throughout the series. Getting pulled into a personal exchange with a former teammate would only have given New York another emotional win.
The clip stood out because Sochan kept talking, but Wembanyama treated the moment like background noise. In a game that demanded focus from San Antonio’s franchise player, silence was its own response.
