Vinicius Junior played a decisive role as Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 in a dramatic La Liga derby. The Brazilian scored twice as Los Blancos came from behind to secure another major result in an impressive run.

The victory extended Real Madrid’s strong form, with five straight wins despite Kylian Mbappe’s absence. It also followed a huge Champions League knockout result against Manchester City, reinforcing their momentum at a crucial stage of the season.

However, Vinicius’ post-match comments last Sunday have sparked concern. His reaction to the upcoming international break could prove controversial, particularly given his status with Brazil.

After the match, Vinicius expressed frustration about leaving club football for international duty.

“It’s a shame, we’re on a good run now,” he told Real Madrid TV (via FotMob).

“We’re all going away with our national teams, and hopefully we can all come back without injuries for the most important stretch of the season.”

While the focus was clearly on maintaining Real Madrid’s momentum, the wording may not sit well with Brazilian supporters. With the World Cup approaching, national team commitment is under increased scrutiny.

The situation is even more delicate given Vinicius’ role. In Neymar’s absence, he is expected to lead Brazil, yet his performances for the national side have not matched his club level, often making him the main target of criticism within the squad.

Vinicius’ numbers for Brazil highlight the issue. Across 45 senior appearances, he has scored eight goals and provided seven assists.

The numbers are not poor, but they fall short of expectations given his Real Madrid form.

Recent performances have done little to ease concerns. In friendlies against Tunisia and Senegal in November 2025, he failed to score or assist despite leading the line.

Those displays reinforced criticism from fans who expect more from the team’s main attacking figure.

Vinicius remains one of the world’s best at club level, but his international reputation is still under pressure.
