Kota Kinabalu: It was a historic outing for Sabah State Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) as their athletes captured three gold, three silver and two bronze medals at the 54th Mr Malaysia Championship in Kuantan, Pahang last weekend.

Their best ever result in the competition also saw them finish fourth overall.

The gold medal winners were Mohd Hakimi Abdullah (Masters Under 70kg), Affan Affandy Sazali (Men's Sport Physique Over 170cm) and Martin Magalai (Flyweight Over 60kg).

The silver medallists were Mohammad Asraf Hamza (Men's Sport Physique Under 170cm), Tony Meldan Masabal (Light Flyweight 55kg and above) and Allen Carlson Aloysious Sern (Middleweight 85kg), while the bronze delivered by Wandy Anjum (65kg and above) and Grace Voo (Light Heavyweight 90kg).

SBBA president Clarence Runggi was proud of the athletes’ achievement.

“We not only managed to surpass the two-gold target but also to win eight medals in total and for the first time in history, we managed to place in fourth position overall.

“This is our best achievement on the Mr Malaysia stage and further proved that Sabah is gaining more respect in the national bodybuilding arena.

“We are confident that it will be a catalyst to strengthen the development of the sport in Sabah and produce more champions in the future," he said.  He also expressed his appreciation to the athletes, coaches, officials and the strong support from the Sabah Sports Council and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
