Humpback whale Timmy remains stranded in shallow waters in northern Germany

A humpback whale in the shallow waters of the Baltic Sea remained stranded off the island of Poel in northern Germany on Tuesday.

As of midday, the whale, nicknamed Timmy by local media, was still lying at the mouth of the bay known as Kirchsee, according to German news agency dpa.

Footage showed the whale moving its pectoral fins, known as flippers.

The whale had briefly swum free Monday morning as the water level in the bay rose, but two hours later became stuck again in shallow water.

In the evening, it was seen moving toward the deep channel once more before resting again, dpa reported.

Timmy was first spotted in the region on March 3. It is unclear why the whale entered the Baltic Sea, far from its natural habitat in the Atlantic Ocean.
